Grant Writing for Media Artists

This popular workshop is designed to help media artists represent their projects clearly and concisely. Veteran filmmaker and SAW Video alumni Penny McCann will take emerging film and video makers through the process of applying to art councils and cultural agencies for funding.

Focus for the workshop will be on the Canada Councils upcoming "Explore and Create" Sept. 12 deadlines, the Ontario Arts Councils Oct. 2nd Media Artists Creation Projects deadline, as well as the City of Ottawa's upcoming December Arts Funding Program Deadline.  SAW Video's in-house programs will also be discussed, such as SAW Video’s Production Grant, Jumpstart Mentorship program, and Indigenous Voices program.

Participants will learn the do's and don'ts of grant writing (aka "Penny's Principles of Grant Writing") and see examples of successful proposals, complete with budgets, schedules, and project descriptions. They will learn about the jury process and how to effectively present support material.

Time will be set aside for one-on-one sessions with Penny to discuss the specific grants that they wish to apply for. This will be a 15-minute session and will provide the opportunity to talk with Penny about a grant you would like feedback on or a future grant you would like to apply for.
