FEEDBACK II
EXPERIMENTAL PRESENTATION SERIES

 Video meets performance
with local multidisciplinary artists

collective (gulp) dance projects and Theo Pelmus

FEEDBACK with collective (gulp) dance projects and Theo Pelmus
Presented by SAW Video
May 14th, 2008
7:30pm in Club SAW
67 Nicholas Street, Ottawa
Free Admission

Join us for the second edition of SAW Video’s FEEDBACK Series, a new presentation lab showcasing a variety of selected artists from the Ottawa-Gatineau region who push the boundaries of the video medium.  Composed of video screenings and live performances (live remix, dance and performance art), new creations and explorations are presented to the public in an informal context aiming at creating an exchange between audience and artists around the creative process.

SAW Video’s second Feedback lab features two live presentations: This is real-time: the interaction of improvised dance and video by collective (gulp) dance projects (Alexis Kate Andrew and Elizabeth MacKinnon) and Performance Anatomy by Theo Pelmus.  In both presentations video and the body fuse together to play with the notion of the live performance.

collective (gulp)'s aim is to expand the understanding and appreciation of impro-visational dance as a form with the potential to express both physical inventiveness and deep humanity.  With this project, collective (gulp) moves towards the development of a lexicon of meaning arising from the interaction of improvised dance performance and video projection.  Using recorded and live-feed video and video manipulation software (Isadora), (gulp) will set out proposed terms of reference for working with media and improvised movement. Using variations in scale, speed and manipulation of imagery, and basic improvisational structures, (gulp) will solicit feedback from the audience to build a "once in a lifetime" performance in real-time, while weaving in some words from artists, critics and theorists on video, the body, and interactivity.

collective (gulp) dance projects is Ottawa-based dance artists Alexis Kate Andrew and Elizabeth MacKinnon. Since its creation in 2002, collective (gulp) has presented works in Ottawa and Toronto in a wide variety of spaces, including street corners, foyers, galleries, and theatres. Recent pieces by (gulp) include TALK SHOW, 6x2 and Random Access Memory, projects involving dance, video, theatre and visual arts.  (gulp) is also committed to providing performance opportunities for other artists. Past projects include the square zero independent dance festival (2004) which produced over 25 local, national and international artists and square zero: the second edition (2005), a project that drew artists from a range of disciplines from Canada, the UK, and Belgium to work together virtually and in person to create a unique performance experience.

Theo Pelmus describes his process of work “as a continuous construction and deconstruction of the concept of identity through which I want to establish a dialog between the process and the idea of self-representation. As a native-born Romanian who has emigrated to Canada I often feel I exist in a state of transition, uncertain, untitled. As a result of these feelings I am compelled to search the process of dissolution/ transformation of the self-portrait as an intimate state into a new state. For the FEEDBACK presentation, I will engage the audience in an active presentation of my video-performance works. The video component in my performance work constitutes an active, not a passive, role; the video work itself becomes like another performer. In this way, I create a kind of double reality toward which a dialog through live and recorded performances is established. I believe that in this way the themes/concepts central to my works (such as the idea of identity and mirroring) will be translated in a more direct way to the public.”

Theo Pelmus has a BFA and MFA from the University of Fine Art Nicolae Grigorescu in Bucharest. He has exhibited extensively since 2001, at KO.KE.M Contemporary Art Museum in Miercurea Ciuc in Romania, Paul Kleefeld Gallery in Copenhagen, the Wade Project and Engine Gallery in Toronto and La Petite Mort Gallery which represents him in Ottawa. In 2006, he was awarded an Emerging Artist Grant from the Ontario Arts Council and he is the 2007 recipient of the Dennis Tourbin Fund for Emerging Artist for performance art. He is currently a programming member of the Available Light Screening Collective and a board member of Gallery 101.

The mission of SAW Video is to support ground-breaking artistic production, presentation, and programming of independent media art. To this aim, it  provides production and presentation services to its membership including affordable technical facilities, and a wide range of programs designed to create an atmosphere that will inspire production through the exchange of ideas around form, content and style.

The Feedback presentation series is made possible through a Supplementary Funding Initiative from the Canada Council for the Arts.  SAW Video receives ongoing financial support from the City of Ottawa, the Ontario Arts Council, the Ontario Trillium Foundation, and the Canada Council for the Arts.

FEEDBACK II

Call for Submissions - Moving Stories Film Festival

The new Moving Stories Film Festival is all about celebrating books and the written word on film. We’re calling for submissions from filmmakers who have created original films based on published literary works. From mini-docs, illustrated author interviews, drama and comedy to animation and filmic experiments of all kinds, films which take their narrative and subject from the landscape of a novel, non-fiction book or a poem, are becoming a recognized new genre. Moving Stories is providing a stage for these films, celebrating the differences these complementary media have for one another.

We are currently accepting film submissions, preferably under 15 minutes in duration, that are adapted from a written source. The final deadline is May 15. Visit www.movingstoriesfilmfest.com for guidelines and more details.

The Moving Stories Film Festival will tour across the country to public literary and film festivals such as Ottawa Writers Festival, WordFest: Banff-Calgary International Writers Festival, Vancouver International Writers Festival, St. John’s Intl Women’s Film Fest, and venues in Toronto.

Festival Programmer: Paul Quarrington (award-winning author and filmmaker); Festival Film Advisors: Robert Lantos (Serendipity Points Films); Anne Collins (Random House of Canada); Sarah Polley (Director/Writer/Actor); Nino Ricci (Author); Judith Keenan BookShorts Literacy Program).

CAFKA VIDEO PROJECTS
goback

CAFKA is launching an exciting new series of monumental, outdoor, video projections. Through a unique collaboration with Christie Digital Systems, CAFKA is embarking on an ambitious series of video projections which will be sited on public buildings throughout the Region of Waterloo. Our pilot project for this series is scheduled for September, 2008. We invite proposals for new or existing works suitable for large scale, outdoor, projection. Single, multi-channel, and interactive works will be considered. Because of the scale of the projections & caliber of the equipment, High Definition
video (1080p) is preferred. Please note that audio will not be available for most sites.

CAFKA takes art out of the confines of the gallery walls and places it in civic spaces to engage and confront the broader public. We offer the public an opportunity to engage with internationally relevant, ambitious, contemporary art. Artists have the opportunity to create work that needn’t adhere to the rules of presenting art within the gallery/museum system. Christie Digital is the world’s leading manufacturer of digital video projectors, and is locally based in Kitchener. They have provided projection equipment to organizations such as the Museum of Modern Art and the Toronto International Film Festival. Christie Digital was the lead corporate sponsor of CAFKA.07: Haptic, and we are thrilled to be working with them again.

The first installment of this series will take place throughout the Region of Waterloo in September, 2008. Artist Fees paid: CAD $5,000, which is intended to cover all aspects of production. Installation costs, excluding special requirements for interactive works, needn’t be included in artists’ budgets.

Please submit 10 images (JPG/JPEG format), or video documentation (MPG/MPEG or Quicktime format), along with 10 copies of printed matter including: Curriculum Vitae, project proposal, detailed technical requirements (including playback source), budget, and a completed application form. Applications are being accepted on an ongoing basis, but only proposals received on or before June 15th will be considered for the first (pilot) installment. Only artists selected will be contacted.
