SARAH COOK Writing Residency

SAW Video welcomes internationally renowned curator and author Sarah Cook in Ottawa for a month-long writing residency at the centre from April 26th to May 22nd 2010.

The aim of the residency is to provide an outside perspective on the process of SAW Video's commissioning project Public Domain while offering insight on the project within the concept of media arts disciplines. Cook's writing will be included in a SAW Video publication that will accompany Public Domain as it is screened across North America and Europe throughout 2011. This provides contextual information about the commissioning project and contribute to the greater discourse on video art.

Biography
Sarah Cook is co-editor of CRUMB (the Curatorial Resource for Upstart Media Bliss) and research fellow at the University of Sunderland, has curated exhibitions and commissioned new work for AV Festival (NE England), Eyebeam (New York), BALTIC (Gateshead), Edith Russ Haus (Oldenberg, Germany), The New Media Institute and Walter Phillips Gallery (Banff, Canada), the Bellevue Art Museum (Seattle), the Walker Art Center (Minneapolis), and the Reg Vardy Gallery (Sunderland). During a 2001 Research Fellowship at the National Gallery of Canada she researched the history of new media curatorial practice in Canada. She is currently commissioning online work about outer space with Xcult.org.

Cook's residency coincides with the Canadian launch of her groundbreaking book Rethinking Curating –co-authored with Beryl Graham and published by MIT Press. The book is available at the National Gallery of Canada's bookstore.

SAW Vidéo accueille la commissaire de réputation internationale Sarah Cook a compléter une résidence d'écriture d'un mois au centre du 26 avril au 22 mai 2010.

Le but de la résidence est d'obtenir un point de vue extérieur sur le processus de commandes d'ouvres de SAW Vidéo dans le cadre de son projet intitulé Domaine Public, ainsi que d'en offrir un aperçu à partir du concept de disciplines en arts médiatiques. Le texte de Cook paraîtra dans une publication de SAW Vidéo accompagnant Domaine Public dont les ouvres feront l'objet de présentations en Amérique du Nord et en Europe tout au long de 2011. L'ouvrage fournira des renseignements contextuels sur ce projet de commandes et contribuera à élargir le discours sur l'art vidéographique.

Elle a été commissaire d'expositions et a commandé des œuvres nouvelles dans le cadre de l'AV Festival (Nord-Est de l'Angleterre), pour Eyebeam (New York), BALTIC (Gateshead), la Edith-Russ-Haus (Oldenberg, Allemagne), le New Media Institute et la Walter Phillips Gallery (Banff), le Bellevue Art Museum (Seattle), le Walker Art Center (Minneapolis) et la Reg Vardy Gallery (Sunderland). À titre de chercheuse au Musée des beaux-arts du Canada en 2001, elle s'est intéressée à l'histoire de la pratique de commissaire en nouveaux médias au Canada. Elle commande présentement des œuvres en ligne sur la notion d'espace pour le compte de Xcult.org.

La résidence de Cook correspond avec le lancement au Canada de son ouvrage innovateur Rethinking Curating, cosigné par Beryl Graham et publié aux éditions MIT Press. Le livre est disponible à la librairie du Musée des beaux-arts du Canada.
