Philippe Hamelin has programmed a selection of surprising video portraits. From an album of 16 informal video sketches entitled Unplugged, the screening presents 3 works: Sally; Chelsea Hotel, Room 207; and Perfect Day. Behind the camera in Sally, Wong's gaze is uninhibited and instinctual; the camera lingers upon the beautiful Sally, from Tiananmen Square to a sumptuous suite at the China Club in Beijing where she relaxes in her bathrobe. Chelsea Hotel, Room 207 moves into a world where three men, clad only in their underpants, share with us the crack-induced euphoria of a New York hotel. Perfect Day focuses on Wong himself, alone in his studio searching for inspiration. Revealing the insecure moments in the everyday life of a mature artist, Paul searches for the roots of his creative process.
In Set Fires, Wong documents rioting anarchist punks on a two night rampage, depicting the transformation of a neighbourhood. EASTVAN John is a mid-length work set in Vancouver's rough side, a place where drugs, prostitution, and flagrant racism are abruptly contrasted with a rising yuppie class of money and privilege. EASTVAN John is one of a number of new portrait-oriented videos by Wong, whose production and proliferation have been accelerated by recent innovations in computer digital technology.

Trois oeuvres sont tirées d'un album de 16 esquisses vidéo de style décontracté, réunies sous le titre Unplugged : Sally; Chelsea Hotel, Room 207, et Perfect Day. À la caméra dans Sally, Wong pose son regard sans inhibitions, instinctivement; la caméra caresse la belle Sally qui se détend, vêtue d'une robe de chambre, dans une suite somptueuse du China Club à Beijing. Chelsea Hotel, Room 207 présente l'univers de trois hommes en caleçons, qui partagent avec nous l'euphorie provoquée par le crack, dans un hôtel new-yorkais. Perfect Day est centré sur Wong, seul dans son atelier, en quête d'inspiration. Paul dévoile les moments d'anxiété de la vie quotidienne d'un artiste accompli, à la recherche des racines de son processus créateur.
Documentant les actions d'anarchistes punks déchaînés, la vidéo Set Fires dépeint la transformation d'un quartier, tout comme EASTVAN John, un moyen métrage se déroulant dans le quartier difficile d'East Vancouver, un lieu où la drogue, la prostitution et le racisme avoué contrastent vivement avec une nouvelle classe de yuppies fortunés et privilégiés. Ces vidéos figurent parmi les nombreux récents vidéo-portraits de Wong, des oeuvres dont la production et la prolifération a connu une accélération, grâce aux dernières innovations en matière de technologie numérique.

Paul Wong is one of Canada's pioneer and leading video artists, an engaged witness driven by voracious curiosity, uncompromised integrity and a denial of convention. Dealing with themes of identity, memory and death, he questions contemporary ideals of beauty and sexuality, shining light on subjects usually kept in the dark.
Wong is also known for his live audience and performance work, which is characterized by a raw energy and frequent shock value. Come out for the evening and experience an in-depth interview, cat-and-mouse style, as Paul Wong goes 'toe to toe' with Ms. Heather Keung, Artistic Director of Toronto's Reel Asian Film Festival. SAW Video member, Chris Ikonomopoulos, will be podcasting the event.

Paul Wong's Master Class is an opportunity for artists, video and filmmakers, curators and programmers to go head to head with Paul Wong, the master of his own universe. Participants are encouraged to bring a short sample of video, film, visual, performance, or installation work to show 'n tell which will be critiqued / deconstructed. (Note: SAW Video can support DVD or Betacam SP formats.) Wong will provide insight, oversight, distraction and inspiration. With an interesting and interdisciplinary approach, Paul's method's will razzle-dazzle the way you think about your work.
Le cours de maître donné par Paul Wong sera l'occasion, pour les artistes, vidéastes, cinéastes, commissaires et programmateurs, d'affronter directement Paul Wong, le maître de son propre univers. Les participants sont invités à apporter un bref échantillon – vidéo, film, production visuelle, performance ou installation – pour faire une présentation, qui sera suivie d'une critique/déconstruction. (SAW Vidéo peut accueillir les systèmes DVD ou Betacam SP.) Wong apportera idées, supervision, distraction et inspiration. De par son approche intéressante et interdisciplinaire, la méthode de Paul chamboulera la perception que vous avez de votre travail.
