Open call for our springtime exhibition, Under New Management: Video Rental Store

Seeking: Video submissions of all genres, lengths and languages on DVD

Deadline to submit: February 28th, 2018

Under New Management (Suzanne Carte and Su-Ying Lee) are seeking video artworks for their continuing project, the Video Rental Store, to be installed in Ottawa at SAW Video's Knot project space from April 26, 2018 - June 9, 2018. Simply put, it is an exhibition, which operates like a video rental store that rents out artist’s videos. The project employs all the characteristics of the retail environment to connect with the local community, while challenging the gallery’s role as an intermediary that delimits the viewer’s direct access to art and artists.

The video store was conceived of as an experimental form of engagement, where artists have the opportunity to receive responses directly from audiences. In turn, the viewer has an uncommon channel to the artist. In addition to payment, rental and return are also on an honour-system basis, removing barriers that exist due to membership, deposit, and return policies at commercial ventures.

Since 2013, the Video Store has travelled to the ODD Gallery at the Klondike Institute of Art and Culture in Dawson YT, Access Gallery in Vancouver BC, Third Space Gallery in Saint John NB, Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery in Sarnia, Union Gallery at Queen's University in Kingston and New Gallery in Calgary. Under New Management are refreshing their titles in anticipation for this springtime exhibition at SAW Video.

• “Customers” can borrow videos on the honour system. No membership or deposit required.

• They are asked to pay upon return of the DVD.

• Pay-what-you-want system asks that the renter pays something that reflects their appreciation of the work. We encourage non-monetary exchange.

• All payments given for the rental of your work will be sent to you at the end of the exhibition (examples have been notes, books, videos, crafts and cash).

• Sometimes the videos are not returned. That is part of the risk.

• We accept all artist videos submitted, but will not tolerate work that is racist, sexist, homophobic, ageist, classist, transphobic, cissexist, or ableist

• The fee for your participation is the payment renters give for borrowing your work The video will be archived in the Video Store Rental collection for future exhibitions

• Videos are not returned to artists

• You will receive regular updates and payments for your rentals
