In DOPPELGANGING, internationally acclaimed media artist Basma Alsharif delves into the idea of bilocation, the phenomenon of being in multiple places in the same moment, as a way of talking about her specific approach to making art and more broadly the notion of how we position ourselves as artists and filmmakers. Who are we? Where are we? How is our perspective shaped by being male or female, young or old? What role does our race, heritage, or education play in how we see things? As Alsharif will explain, the answer is often many different things at once. This workshop will feature special exercises devised by Alsharif that will challenge participants to define themselves as both artists and audience members and to explore and discuss issues of identity in an engaging group dynamic.
Presented in conjunction with the screening Everybody Knows This is Nowhere: The Videos of Basma Alsharif, which takes place November 15th in Club SAW as part of Galerie SAW Gallery’s Art Star Video Art Biennial V.
