May 24th 2013, 7 :30pm
Club SAW, 67 Nicholas Street, Ottawa K1N7B9
For her performance at SAW Video, artist Maria Hupfield presents Contain that Force: 7 Solo Acts; a new project comprising video projection and live performance. Contain that Force: 7 Solo Acts features objects that Maria solicited from seven artists to be utilized in this project, including Ottawa-based writer and journalist Waubgeshig Rice, musician and artist Laura Ortman (Brooklyn), Ann Beam, artist and founder of the Neon Raven Gallery (Central Manitoulin Island), and legendary elder artist Jaune Quick–to–See Smith (Albuquerque). Activating these objects through performance, she will form a new compendium of personal and historical narratives that intersect Native American performance and art.
Maria Hupfield (b.1975) is currently based in Brooklyn, NY and a graduate of York University (MFA 2004). Hupfield was selected for the 2013 Winter Studio Residency, Wave Hill, NY, and the 2012 Artist in Leadership Program, Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, Washington, DC. Recent exhibitions include “Beat Nation” at the Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery, Toronto, ON, “Changing Hands 3” at Museum of Art and Design, New York, NY, and “7a*11d” International Performance Festival, Toronto, ON.
